 The latest quake3 exploit is running out of control like a wildfire. This is the problem:
"A second issue fixed in this release would let a malicious server exploit a buffer overflow to execute a shellcode on connecting clients."

| Quake3: Q3 PunkBuster Server Update |
Even Balance Inc. has released PunkBuster Server Version 1.043 for Quake 3.
The new server is available via auto-update and from the PB downloads.

Release Notes for PB Server v1.043:
new pb_sv_lan setting defaults to 0; when set to 1, PB will behave as though it has no Internet access
changes to the WebTool: the rcon password can no longer be set or displayed via the WebTool; also, the pb_sv_httpkey (Web Key) cannot be directly changed via the WebTool; new additional layer of mangling to hinder packet sniffing attempts to lift the Web Key; we recommend all PB Admins who use the WebTool set the pb_sv_httpkey setting to something different from the server's rcon password; we also recommend that admins regularly change both the Web Key and rcon password.

AR Tray Spy is a small tool which allows you to monitor your favourite (Q3 Engine) game servers from your Windows tray.

| Quake3: Guid system obsolete again? |
Gumby writes "The folks over at PB have been under the microscope lately, both by cheaters and players. After last months turmoil, PB seems to have gotten back on their feet and actively perusing their original goal of catching the cheaters.
The new guid system is up and running and the staff at pb was quoted as saying that admins can now be confident about banning cheaters guids, as the new system is server assigned and not controlled by the client. On December 10th, the Even Balance home page announced"

| Quake3: Punk Buster Update |
Gumby writes "Punk Buster Update: The folks over at EvenBalance report that they are almost done with their new GUID system to identify each player uniquely by a GUID number. The new system that has taken most, if not all of the Punk Buster crew's energy and resources, is being restructured to prevent "client GUID" stealing and to prevent OGC clients from "stealing" such a GUID to re-enter a server they were previously banned on.
In taking the time to re-build this feature, NoSkill has advanced his OGC bot to version 2.40. Version 2.10 and above OGC bots CAN in fact go undetected by PB on virtually all Q3 game servers. OGC site was updated on the 15th of November to include the following:"

| Quake3: PB kicking clients for bad pbag file. |
Gumby writes " Last night I noticed that EVERYONE on my servers and servers all around the country were getting kicked by PunkBuster for a bad or missing pbag file. This file is actually a hidden system file located inside the pb folder and is a .dll file. WTF?? right?
So I did some snooping and found this: The folks over at CounterHack that have been following the story of PB since its inception were aware that this problem was gonna rise up over a week ago.

| Quake3: OFx Q3 Version Switch v2.04beta |
Play on multiple Quake 3 servers, running different Quake 3 versions? Give OFx Q3 Version Switcher a try. In v2.04beta, by request, I have added a commandline parameter to change version thereby bypassing the "menu" and directly launching into the desired version of the game. The new "+version" parameter will now allow the user to do just that. For more specifics, read the "readme" file here.

| Quake3: Threewave/Punkbuster Server Admins |
This is a few days old and was sent to the mailinglist members as soon as it was released from Threewave. Guess it wasn't mentioned here. Here's the info straight from Sludge.
I have discovered a security hole in the default install of Quake 1.32 and Punkbuster. It allows anyone on the server to change the map, and kick/ban players.
It's entirely possible to plug this hole. Same as the previous post, server administrators need to Email me after reconstructing my address by removing the hyphens and spaces. (Spam filter, y'know). Send me a message with the name of the server you operate, and I will give a description of how to patch the hole.
I have sent notification to Id and Punkbuster, and they both say that this is a high priority fix. However, after two days, nothing has been done to the best of my knowledge. So, this notification of admins is the next step.
The official public server, quake.threewave.com is of course, patched and running smoothly by yours truly.
Note that there is nothing anyone can do to mess with your hard drive, or files outside of Quake with this. This exploit only works inside of Quake 3. Thanks goes out to VertigoX for the heads up of it not being posted as a new item. Head on over to Threewave and email Sludge.
